The lawmaker representing Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, has left the All Progressives Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to reshape party alignments in the state.
The defection became public on Thursday after the lawmaker formally aligned with the NDC. The move came shortly after he was unable to secure the APC ticket to contest for another term in the Kano State House of Assembly.
Mai Rigar Fata currently represents Gwale Local Government Area, the home local government of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. His exit adds to recent political changes taking place within party structures as preparations for future elections gather pace.
His move was officially received in Abuja during a meeting with senior figures in the NDC, including party leader Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The development also attracted another political figure from Kano, as former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government, Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, joined the NDC alongside the serving lawmaker.
The latest defections are expected to strengthen the NDC’s presence in Kano and may add fresh political calculations ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
The departure of a sitting lawmaker from the APC also reflects the growing competition among parties as politicians reposition themselves following primary election outcomes.
Observers believe more realignments could emerge in the coming months as parties continue consultations and internal selections ahead of the next election cycle.
