The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration across Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the holiday declaration is in recognition of the religious importance of Eid-el-Kabir to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world who observe the festival as part of Islamic tradition.
The government described the celebration as a period linked to faith, sacrifice, obedience, and care for others. It noted that the occasion remains an important moment for spiritual reflection and community values.
The minister congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and those living abroad as they prepare for the celebration. He encouraged citizens to use the holiday period to pray for the country and seek peace, stability, and progress.
The government also appealed to Nigerians to promote unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual understanding during the festive period.
According to the statement, national development and social harmony require collective effort, and occasions such as Eid-el-Kabir provide another opportunity for citizens to strengthen relationships and support one another.
The Federal Government further wished Muslims across the country a peaceful and fulfilling celebration and expressed hope that the season would bring joy and blessings to families and communities nationwide.
