The Labour Party has completed its primary elections ahead of the June 20, 2026 by-elections, producing former Minister of Information Labaran Maku, former diplomat Simon Eze and four other candidates to contest vacant legislative positions across different parts of Nigeria.
The party announced the outcome on Tuesday in Abuja through its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, following the conclusion of the selection process held in affected states and constituencies.
According to the party, Maku secured the ticket for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District through a consensus arrangement during the primary conducted at the party’s zonal office. In Enugu North Senatorial District, former diplomat Simon Eze also emerged through consensus after a process the party described as peaceful and orderly.
Other candidates selected by the Labour Party include Sam Kinanee for Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Ige Asemudara for Ondo South, Abubakar Muhammad for Dawaki Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State and Muhammad Galadima for Zuru State Constituency in Kebbi State.
The party explained that the senatorial vacancies in Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East followed the deaths of lawmakers representing the areas in the current 10th Senate.
It recalled that Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North died on November 18, 2025, after a brief illness, while Senator Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North passed away on December 31, 2025, after a prolonged illness. Senator Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South-East also died on February 18, 2026.
Labour Party commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for supervising the primaries and said the exercise was conducted peacefully across the affected constituencies.
The party also called on members and supporters to unite behind the selected candidates ahead of the June 20 by-elections, expressing confidence that the candidates reflected its values and political direction.
Party leaders added that the selection process focused on producing candidates considered capable of representing the interests of the party and voters in the affected areas.
