Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the economic policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu as the administration marked its third year in office on Thursday, saying the decisions were aimed at securing Nigeria’s future despite the hardship currently faced by many citizens.
Akpabio, who spoke through a statement released to celebrate the anniversary of the Tinubu administration, said the government had taken bold steps to reform the economy and improve infrastructure across the country. He said the President chose policies that could strengthen the nation in the long run instead of temporary relief measures.
The Senate President referred to projects and programmes introduced under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the student loan scheme, the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, the deployment of compressed natural gas buses and conversion centres, tax reform plans and the completion of the OB3 gas pipeline project.
According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy and the decision to unify foreign exchange rates were difficult actions but necessary to place the Nigerian economy on a stable path. He said the administration remained focused on reforms despite economic pressure and global challenges affecting many countries.
Akpabio also assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly would continue to support the Federal Government through laws and policies aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms and development projects.
The Senate President further expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and hinted at political support for the President ahead of future elections, while wishing him success in completing his tenure.
His remarks came at a time many Nigerians continue to debate the impact of the administration’s economic policies. While supporters believe the reforms could improve the economy in the future, critics argue that rising prices, inflation and the high cost of living have increased hardship across the country.
President Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, and his administration’s economic policies have remained among the most discussed issues in Nigeria’s political and economic space.
