National leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced former Kano State deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election in Kano State.
Kwankwaso made the announcement on Friday through a statement shared on his official handle. He also revealed that Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna had been selected as the party’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
According to the former Kano governor, the decision followed consultations within the party leadership and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement. He said the selections were based on loyalty, fairness, competence, and unity within the political structure.
Kwankwaso also wished the party success during its affirmation exercise and expressed confidence that the NDC would perform strongly in the coming elections.
Gwarzo is a longtime political associate of Kwankwaso and previously served as deputy governor under Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Before becoming deputy governor, he held the position of Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration and also served as chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.
He later resigned from office after Governor Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress. Gwarzo afterward joined the African Democratic Congress alongside Kwankwaso before eventually moving to the NDC.
Gawuna, who was picked for the Kano Central senatorial race, earlier served as deputy governor under former Kano State governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He was also the governorship candidate of the APC during the 2023 election in Kano State.
The former deputy governor recently joined forces with Kwankwaso and the NDC after leaving the APC.
The latest announcement adds to the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in Kano State where alliances and defections continue to shape party structures and future contests.
