On Saturday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said Rivers people should continue supporting President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the state has gained more appointments, projects and opportunities under the current administration than it did under previous governments.
Wike made the remarks during a luncheon organised by the Rainbow Coalition for candidates contesting the upcoming governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections in Rivers State. The event brought together political figures from different parties and supporters of the coalition.
According to the former Rivers governor, residents should assess the level of federal attention the state has received since Tinubu assumed office in 2023 and compare it with what was obtained under past administrations. He said the number of appointments and opportunities given to Rivers indigenes showed that the state had been well recognised by the Federal Government.
Wike maintained that politics should be driven by performance and development rather than ethnic or regional considerations. He said voters should focus on leaders who can deliver results and improve the welfare of the people.
The minister also advised party supporters and candidates to concentrate on grassroots political activities, saying elections are won through strong structures at polling units, wards and local government areas rather than media appearances and public publicity.
He expressed confidence in the strength of the Rainbow Coalition, describing it as a growing political force in Rivers State. Wike said politicians seeking relevance and electoral success in the state should work with the coalition, which he believes is positioned to shape future political outcomes.
Speaking further, he warned against actions capable of creating instability in Rivers State. He said the people of the state value peace but would not allow outsiders or political opponents to undermine their interests.
Wike also extended an olive branch to politicians who may have fallen out with the coalition, urging them to return and join efforts aimed at advancing the state’s development. He said reconciliation and cooperation were necessary for the progress of Rivers State.
The event was attended by governorship candidates from several political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Action Alliance. Representatives of other parties were also present. Several political leaders and government officials used the occasion to commend Wike for bringing together key political actors from different backgrounds under one platform.
