The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has announced that Sunday, June 14, 2026, will be observed as a nationwide Black Sunday to honour Nigerians who have lost their lives to terrorism, banditry, kidnappings and other violent attacks across the country.
The decision was made known on Tuesday following the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026. According to the association, the special observance is intended to remember victims of insecurity and draw attention to the growing concerns over safety in many parts of Nigeria.
As part of activities planned for the occasion, CAN also unveiled a three-day national prayer programme scheduled to hold from June 12 to June 14. The prayer gathering is expected to bring together Christians across different denominations to seek divine intervention over the security situation and the challenges facing the nation.
Speaking after the summit, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, expressed concern about the continued wave of violence, kidnappings and attacks affecting communities across the country. He noted that while prayers remain important, practical steps must also be taken to tackle the security crisis and protect citizens.
The Christian body called on the Federal Government to treat insecurity as an urgent national issue requiring immediate action. CAN maintained that the situation has reached a stage where stronger measures are needed to restore peace and public confidence.
The association also renewed calls for reforms within the nation’s security system. It backed the creation of state police and advocated a more decentralised security structure that would allow quicker responses to threats at the local level.
In addition, CAN urged authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the release of people currently being held by kidnappers and criminal groups. The association also called for justice for victims and their families, insisting that those responsible for violent crimes must be identified and held accountable.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in different parts of the country, with religious leaders, civil society groups and citizens continuing to demand stronger action from government and security agencies.
CAN said the planned Black Sunday and national prayer programme would serve as a period of reflection, remembrance and renewed calls for lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges.
