The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is scheduled to deliver the convocation lecture at the University of Port Harcourt’s 36th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The event will take place at the institution’s New Convocation Arena in Choba, Port Harcourt, where Wike is expected to address graduating students, members of the academic community and invited guests. His lecture will focus on leadership and infrastructure development in Nigeria, with attention on the lessons future leaders can learn from governance and public service.
The development was made public in a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
According to the statement, the invitation was extended by the university’s management through a letter dated April 20, 2026, and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill.
The university considered Wike a suitable choice for the role because of his years in public service and his involvement in governance and infrastructure projects at different levels of government.
The institution noted that the convocation lecture remains one of the major activities of the ceremony, offering students an opportunity to learn from experienced leaders and gain insight into issues affecting national growth and development.
The university also expressed the belief that Wike’s participation would strengthen the relationship between academic institutions and public leadership while providing guidance to graduates preparing to begin new phases of their lives and careers.
Following the invitation, the minister accepted the request through a letter sent by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi, on April 23, 2026.
The statement explained that Wike selected the lecture topic because of his belief that leadership should produce practical results that improve the lives of citizens. It added that the minister sees infrastructure, social services and public amenities as important measures of effective leadership and governance.
The convocation lecture is expected to be one of the key attractions of the university’s 36th convocation activities, bringing together students, lecturers, alumni, government officials and other stakeholders to discuss leadership and national development.
