The Nigerian Air Force has deployed a surveillance aircraft to assist in the search for teachers and pupils abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, as efforts to secure their release continue.
The development was disclosed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command.
According to the governor, the Air Force responded shortly after the abduction was reported by sending an aerial surveillance platform to monitor the area and gather intelligence. He explained that information obtained from the aircraft has been helping security agencies track activities linked to the kidnapping and coordinate rescue operations.
Makinde said security agencies have been relying on intelligence from the surveillance missions as they work to locate the victims and bring them home safely. He appealed to residents of the affected communities and the wider public to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives while the operation continues.
The governor stated that the state government is deploying every available resource to ensure the victims regain their freedom. He also praised the Nigerian Air Force for its quick intervention and continued support during the operation.
Makinde noted that the surveillance aircraft was provided at a time when Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial security assets are yet to become operational. He explained that the aircraft purchased by the state are currently being assembled at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Lagos before deployment.
He added that the decision to acquire the aerial assets followed consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to maintenance services, technical support and pilot training. According to him, the equipment is expected to strengthen security operations not only in Oyo State but also in neighbouring states once fully operational.
Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh assured the state government that the Air Force would continue to support efforts aimed at rescuing the abducted teachers and pupils.
He said the service remains committed to working with other security agencies to tackle insecurity and protect lives across the country.
Suleh also appreciated the Oyo State Government for its support towards Nigerian Air Force projects and infrastructure within the state. He reiterated the Air Force’s determination to collaborate with stakeholders to improve security and safeguard communities.
The latest operation follows the attack carried out on May 15, 2026, when armed men invaded three schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted 39 students and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46.
The incident renewed concerns about attacks on schools and the safety of students and teachers in vulnerable communities.
