The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced new measures aimed at strengthening its internal operations, improving discipline among members and ensuring that elected officials remain accountable to the party.
The decisions were reached during the party’s second National Executive Committee meeting and made public in a statement issued on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
According to the party, the resolutions form part of ongoing efforts to build a stable political institution capable of operating beyond individual ambitions and personal interests. The NDC said it wants to create a system where party decisions guide the actions of members and public office holders elected on its platform.
As part of the resolutions, the party stated that governments formed under its platform would be expected to work closely with party structures when making decisions on policies, programmes and appointments, except for personal staff positions. The party said this approach is intended to strengthen cooperation between elected officials and the organisation that produced them.
The NDC also maintained that party members must place the interests of the organisation above personal goals. It said all members are expected to work in line with the party’s objectives and respect its decisions.
The party further directed that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations linked to it must operate under its supervision. According to the resolution, such groups should not function independently of the party structure or pursue activities outside the party’s control.
To improve discipline and accountability, the National Executive Committee approved the creation of a comprehensive code of conduct for party officials and candidates. A committee led by the National Legal Adviser has been assigned the responsibility of preparing the framework and guidelines that will govern the conduct of members.
The party also announced the establishment of a National Reconciliation Committee. The committee has been tasked with reaching out to aggrieved members and addressing disputes within the party in order to strengthen unity and reduce internal disagreements.
In addition, the NDC said it is determined to build a lasting institution rather than a platform centred on any individual or temporary political arrangement. The party urged members, aspirants and candidates to remain committed to its long-term growth and to place national interest alongside party loyalty.
On financial matters, the party said it would enforce strict accountability in the handling of party resources. It stated that party funds must be used only for approved activities and that officers entrusted with such resources would be expected to account for them properly.
The NDC also directed that all funds raised by candidates and contributions made to campaign accounts must be fully disclosed through the appropriate party channels. According to the party, the measure is intended to promote transparency and ensure proper monitoring of campaign finances across all levels of the organisation.
The resolutions mark another step in the party’s efforts to strengthen its structures as it prepares for future political activities and elections across the country.
