Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Sunday called for continued prayers for Nigeria, saying those Terrorism Sponsors Must Be Unmasked — Akpabiobehind terrorism and violent crimes in the country must be identified and brought to light. He made the appeal during an Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Akpabio spoke while reflecting on Nigeria’s security challenges and the need for citizens to remain hopeful despite ongoing cases of terrorism, kidnappings and other forms of violence. According to him, prayer has played an important role in confronting insecurity, recalling that he introduced monthly prayer gatherings during his time as governor of Akwa Ibom State when the state was facing problems linked to militancy, abductions and killings.
The Senate President said Nigerians should continue seeking divine intervention as the country works to overcome its security problems. He expressed hope that those financing or supporting criminal activities would eventually be uncovered, regardless of their position or influence.
Speaking on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Akpabio said the country has continued to survive difficult periods, including political instability, economic challenges, insurgency and public health emergencies. He noted that Nigeria has maintained democratic rule for 27 uninterrupted years despite facing several obstacles along the way.
He also acknowledged the pain many Nigerians have experienced due to insecurity. According to him, attacks on communities, kidnappings and other violent incidents have left many families living in fear and uncertainty.
Drawing from his personal experience during the Nigerian Civil War, Akpabio said he understands the emotional pain associated with insecurity and conflict. He expressed concern for children and other victims held in captivity, as well as the families waiting anxiously for their safe return.
The Senate President described the suffering of kidnapped victims as a painful reality for the nation and said efforts must continue until those affected regain their freedom. He expressed confidence that the country would eventually overcome its current security challenges.
Akpabio also assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to restoring peace across the country. He said government efforts are focused on tackling insecurity, protecting citizens and ensuring the release of people still being held by criminal groups.
Also speaking at the event, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the Federal Government is increasing efforts to address economic hardship and strengthen security operations nationwide. He stated that authorities are working to secure the release of abducted persons and improve safety across different parts of the country.
The church service, which carried the theme “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” brought together government officials, religious leaders and worshippers who gathered to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and pray for the nation’s future.
