Former Minister of Power and All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, has denied reports that he plans to leave the APC for the Social Democratic Party, saying on Wednesday in Ibadan that he remains fully committed to his party and has no intention of defecting.
The clarification was made through his media aide, Femi Awogboro, who said the claims linking Adelabu to the SDP were false and had no basis. He explained that the former minister had not discussed or approved any move to another political party.
The reaction came after comments from the SDP camp warning Adelabu against allegedly attempting to secure the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections. The SDP aspirant, Saheed Oladele, had suggested that Adelabu was planning to join the party and influence its ticket process.
Awogboro dismissed the allegation, saying it was created to attract attention and did not reflect any real political development. He added that the APC primary process in Oyo State was still ongoing and no final outcome had been announced, making talk of defection premature.
He also said linking Adelabu to a defection plan was unfair and misleading, adding that it was an attempt to drag his name into unnecessary political discussions. According to him, Adelabu is focused on his political ambition within the APC and has no reason to seek another platform.
The media aide further stated that Adelabu has held important government positions and remains satisfied with his role in the APC. He said suggestions that the former minister was seeking relevance through another party were incorrect and did not reflect his political standing.
Awogboro urged those spreading the report to stop and instead concentrate on their own political activities. He also called for a correction of the story and warned that legal action could follow if false claims continued.
He maintained that Adelabu remains active in the APC and is focused on engaging party members and supporters ahead of future elections in Oyo State.
