In a statement issued by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the group said the decision became necessary to prevent individuals and groups from carrying out activities in the name of the suspended offices without proper authorisation from the organisation.
The leadership said the action was also intended to stop activities that could expose members to arrests, detention, violence, or other dangers. According to the group, some individuals have allegedly been using the existence of the leadership offices to justify actions that do not align with IPOB’s objectives.
The Directorate maintained that any future actions carried out in the name of the suspended Office of the Leader would not be regarded as official activities of IPOB. It added that responsibility for such actions would rest solely on those involved.
The group explained that the suspension forms part of a broader effort to reposition the organisation and make its operations more effective. It said the decision was reached after members of the Directorate reviewed developments within the movement and concluded that the step was necessary for the interest of its supporters.
IPOB also stated that the organisation was founded by Biafrans and is not owned or controlled by any single individual. It maintained that the Directorate of State remains the highest decision-making body within the movement and cannot be dissolved by any person acting alone.
The leadership further cited intelligence reports and concerns about recent developments involving communications linked to Kanu, as well as fears that certain persons may be planning activities capable of creating fresh tension in the South-East. It said these concerns contributed to the decision to suspend the leadership offices indefinitely.
Despite the internal changes, the group reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its self-determination campaign through peaceful means. It said its struggle should not result in harm, hardship, or loss of life among the people it claims to represent.
The Directorate concluded that the suspension would remain in force until further review, adding that the measure was taken to preserve the movement’s structure, protect its members, and maintain stability within the organisation.
