The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed suggestions that its decision not to field a candidate in the recent Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election reflected weakness within the party.
The reaction came after Governor Abba Yusuf, through his spokesperson, commented on the party’s absence from the contest and suggested that it pointed to political challenges for the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Responding to the remarks, the NDC leadership in Kano said the party remains focused on long-term political goals and is not distracted by statements from political opponents. The party explained that its decision regarding the by-election was part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening its position ahead of the next general elections.
According to the party, its current efforts are concentrated on expanding its grassroots presence across the 44 local government areas of Kano State. It stated that attention is being given to building stronger structures, uniting members and preparing candidates capable of attracting public support in future elections.
The NDC leadership maintained that participation in every election is not always necessary if it does not align with the party’s wider plans. It said resources are being directed toward voter mobilisation, political awareness campaigns and the development of policies aimed at addressing unemployment, insecurity and economic challenges affecting residents.
The party also expressed confidence in its chances in the 2027 governorship election, noting that it believes growing support from residents and the influence of political forces within its ranks will strengthen its position in the state.
In addition, the NDC called on its supporters to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could create tension. It urged members to continue engaging in lawful political activities while preparing for future elections.
The party further appealed to security agencies to remain neutral and ensure fairness for all political groups as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to democratic principles, issue-based campaigns and its vision of providing effective leadership for the people of Kano State.
