The Rivers State Police Command removed the Divisional Police Officer of Oyigbo Division in Oyigbo Local Government Area following allegations of extortion and abuse of office.
The decision was taken by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, after complaints surfaced against the officer. The allegations were first made public by a human rights activist who accused the DPO of collecting ₦500,000 from a man who was allegedly arrested and detained without any known offence.
The activist shared what he described as proof of the payment on social media and also accused the officer of mishandling another case involving a woman and her estranged husband. According to the claims, the woman was charged with stealing her own children during a family dispute and was later remanded in a correctional facility.
The development sparked criticism from rights groups and members of the public who questioned the actions taken at the police division.
Reacting to the controversy, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed that it had received reports concerning the officer’s conduct. The command stated that the allegations were serious enough to warrant immediate action and a full investigation.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, the police said the removal of the DPO was necessary to allow an independent and fair investigation into the complaints. The command explained that the step was taken as part of its commitment to accountability, professionalism and public trust.
The statement noted that Commissioner Adepoju was disturbed by the allegations and maintained that the police would not tolerate any form of misconduct capable of damaging the image of the force. The command assured residents that the investigation would be handled thoroughly and without favour to any party.
Police authorities further stated that the officer would remain out of the position while investigators examine the claims and gather all relevant facts surrounding the matter. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine any further disciplinary or legal action.
