The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, remains a loyal member of the party despite serving in the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The party made this known on Wednesday while reacting to recent remarks by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, who commended Wike during the inauguration of a project in Abuja.
According to the PDP, Wike’s role in the APC-led Federal Government should not be interpreted as a sign that he has abandoned the opposition party. The party maintained that the former Rivers State governor remains one of its most influential figures and continues to be an important part of its political structure.
Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the PDP described the APC chairman’s praise of Wike as recognition of the quality of leaders produced by the party. It stated that Wike’s performance in office reflects the experience and capacity that PDP members have demonstrated in public service over the years.
The party said it has no intention of allowing Wike to leave its fold, regardless of any political interest or admiration expressed by members of the ruling party. It maintained that there is no arrangement, discussion or understanding that could lead to a permanent political shift by the FCT minister.
PDP further noted that Wike’s appointment into the current administration has not changed his political identity or reduced his commitment to the party. It added that his years of service and contributions to the growth of the party remain appreciated by its leadership.
The opposition party also pointed to projects and developments carried out under Wike’s leadership in the Federal Capital Territory, saying his performance has attracted attention from people across different political backgrounds.
According to the party, the achievements recorded by the FCT minister demonstrate the ability of PDP leaders to deliver results when given the opportunity to serve. It added that Wike’s work in Abuja has further strengthened his standing as a key political figure in the country.
The PDP said the recognition given to Wike by the APC leadership shows his continued relevance in national politics. The party, however, insisted that he remains firmly within its ranks and dismissed any suggestion that he could permanently align with the ruling party.
The party also urged Nigerians to continue supporting the PDP ahead of future elections, stating that it has capable leaders who can contribute to the country’s development and provide effective leadership at different levels of government.
