The Federal Government has warned that anyone found misusing or exposing the personal data of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections will face prosecution. The warning was issued by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, as preparations for the next election cycle gradually begin.
The National Commissioner of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, gave the warning on Saturday during an interview on Channels Television. He said the commission is stepping up efforts to monitor how political parties, organisations and other institutions collect, store and manage the personal information of Nigerians.
Olatunji explained that protecting citizens’ personal data has become more important as political activities increase and parties begin gathering information from members and supporters. He said many organisations collect large amounts of personal data without putting proper measures in place to keep such information safe.
According to him, the commission is concerned that some political groups may not have adequate systems to prevent data leaks or unauthorised access. He said the NDPC would closely monitor compliance with Nigeria’s data protection laws and would not hesitate to take legal action against anyone found violating the rights of citizens.
He warned that individuals or organisations responsible for revealing or mishandling people’s personal information would be prosecuted in line with existing laws. He added that the commission remains committed to ensuring that the privacy of Nigerians is protected throughout the election period.
The NDPC boss also called on political parties and institutions handling personal information to strengthen their data protection measures and comply with all legal requirements.
He said safeguarding citizens’ information is necessary to maintain public trust and protect the integrity of the country’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 elections.
