The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party made the allegation on Tuesday in a statement shared on its verified X account, claiming that the electoral body under its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, is no longer acting as an independent umpire.
According to the PDP, INEC’s actions have raised concerns about its neutrality. The party said the commission’s handling of court judgments, election-related decisions and the electronic transmission of election results has weakened public trust in the electoral process.
The opposition party argued that many Nigerians now see the commission as operating in the interest of the APC rather than serving the entire country. It claimed that the commission’s conduct could affect confidence in the credibility of future elections, especially the 2027 polls.
The PDP also said that for democracy to function properly, citizens must believe that elections can bring about change, even during periods of economic hardship. It maintained that such confidence depends on an electoral body that is fair, transparent and independent.
The party further claimed that confidence in INEC has dropped because many Nigerians no longer believe the commission is carrying out its constitutional duties without political influence.
It insisted that restoring public trust in the electoral process will require the commission to act impartially and independently in all election matters.
