A group of Nigerian youths gathered at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday to demand the release of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, ahead of proceedings in his case. The protesters assembled outside the court premises before the hearing, calling for his freedom and urging the authorities to end his detention.
The demonstration followed an earlier court order that remanded Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory. His legal team had approached the court, asking for the restoration of his bail and the withdrawal of the bench warrant previously issued against him.
The matter came before Justice Mohammed Umar, who had earlier fixed June 30 for a ruling after lawyers representing both sides adopted their written arguments. The court was expected to decide whether Sowore’s bail should be restored and whether the bench warrant should be set aside.
Outside the courtroom, the protesters chanted in support of the detained politician and activist while calling for a better future for the country. They also appealed to security personnel stationed at the court entrance to support efforts aimed at building a better Nigeria, saying the demand was in the interest of future generations.
The demonstration remained peaceful as the protesters continued to express their support for Sowore while awaiting the outcome of the court proceedings.
