Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday called for a full investigation into allegations that soldiers invaded students’ hostels at Osun State University in Osogbo, where students were reportedly assaulted, robbed and some female students allegedly raped. Obi made the call in a statement shared on his official social media page.
The former Anambra State governor said he was disturbed by reports claiming that military personnel entered the hostels, attacked students, took away their personal belongings and subjected some female students to sexual abuse.
Obi said members of the Armed Forces are known for defending the country with discipline and professionalism and should not be linked to actions that violate the rights of the people they are expected to protect.
He urged the military authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations. According to him, anyone found responsible should face the law to ensure justice for the victims and preserve the reputation of the Armed Forces.
Obi said holding those involved accountable would also help prevent similar incidents in the future and strengthen public confidence in the military.
He added that respect for human dignity and the rule of law must remain a priority, noting that abuse of power and impunity should never be accepted in any democratic society.
