President Bola Tinubu on Thursday directed the expansion of road infrastructure to more communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), approving the construction of the Kaba-Kagini-Zaudna road while commissioning the rehabilitated Old Keffi Road in Abuja.
The President said the move is part of his administration’s plan to improve access to underserved communities and bring an end to abandoned projects in the nation’s capital.
Tinubu, who was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the event held along the Gwagwa Rail Station Road, commissioned the rehabilitated road linking Kado Fish Market to Dei-Dei Junction through Life Camp. He said the government would continue extending development across the FCT so that every district and community benefits from ongoing projects.
According to the President, the completion of the Old Keffi Road shows that his administration is fulfilling its promise to complete abandoned projects. He said the government has adopted a system of identifying pressing needs, providing funding and ensuring projects are completed for public use.
Tinubu said the road project would improve transportation for residents and businesses by reducing travel time and transport costs. He added that it would strengthen commercial activities by connecting communities including Kado, Saburi, Gwagwa, Karmo, Idu and Dei-Dei to the Outer Northern Expressway.
He explained that the project was approved after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, informed him about the poor condition of the road serving the affected communities.
Following the report, the Federal Executive Council approved the project and awarded the contract to Lubrik Construction Company Limited based on its previous performance.
The President said his administration would continue awarding contracts based on competence and delivery rather than personal connections. He also praised Wike for overseeing infrastructure development across both the city centre and satellite communities, saying residents can now see the results of ongoing projects throughout the FCT.
Tinubu also commended the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and other officials of the FCT Administration for ensuring the project was completed within schedule while maintaining quality standards.
He said the installation of streetlights along the road would improve security and encourage business activities at night. He also appealed to residents to protect public infrastructure by avoiding vandalism and keeping drainage channels free from refuse.
Earlier, Wike said the rehabilitation of the Old Keffi Road fulfilled a promise made to residents and traders who had requested government intervention after work on the Saburi Road was completed. He recalled that many traders had appealed for the road to be fixed because of its importance to businesses and surrounding communities.
During the commissioning, residents of Kaba, Kagini and Zaudna displayed banners asking for better roads in their communities. Responding to their request, Wike announced that President Tinubu had approved the construction of the Kaba-Kagini-Zaudna road.
The minister directed the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority to instruct Lubrik Construction Company to begin work on the newly approved road immediately.
Wike said the approval reflects the administration’s commitment to bringing development to communities that have lacked basic infrastructure for years. He added that the government would continue responding to projects that improve movement, economic activities and the daily lives of residents across the FCT.
