The Kano State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has rejected reports that its state executive committee has been dissolved and replaced with a caretaker committee, insisting that the leadership remains intact.
The party’s state chairman, Musa Ungogo, made this known on Monday while reacting to an announcement by the party’s Deputy National Chairman for the North-West, Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed. The disagreement has created uncertainty over the party’s leadership in Kano.
Ungogo said the state chapter had not received any official communication from the national leadership confirming the dissolution of its executive. He maintained that the reports circulating about the decision were false and did not follow the party’s constitution.
According to him, if the national leadership intended to dissolve state executives, the decision would have affected other states and not Kano alone. He argued that the move lacked constitutional backing and questioned why only the Kano chapter was targeted.
The state chairman insisted that the current executive remained the lawful leadership of the party in Kano and would continue carrying out its responsibilities until a valid directive was issued through the proper channels of the ADC.
The controversy followed a press conference held earlier on Monday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Kano, where Najaatu Mohammed announced that the state executive had been dissolved. She said the decision was taken in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act to protect the unity and continuity of the party in the state.
She also announced the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by Alhaji Umar Bala, with Isma’il Musa serving as secretary, to oversee the party’s affairs during the transition.
Najaatu appealed to party members to support the caretaker committee, explaining that the decision should not be seen as a judgment against the loyalty or contributions of members who had worked to build the party in Kano.
Despite the announcement, both the existing state executive and the newly named caretaker committee now claim authority over the party’s structure in Kano, leaving the leadership dispute unresolved.
