The All Progressives Congress has criticised opposition political parties for failing to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s deadline for the submission of candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, saying the development shows they are not ready for the polls.
The ruling party made its position known on Sunday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, through the party’s official X account. The APC said it completed the submission of its candidates before the July 11 deadline set by INEC, despite having more aspirants and candidates across different elective positions.
According to the party, INEC later extended the deadline to July 14 after requests from opposition parties seeking additional time to conclude the upload of their candidates’ details. The APC said the electoral commission acted within its legal powers by approving the extension, but maintained that the situation exposed weaknesses in the opposition’s internal preparations.
The party argued that opposition parties had fewer candidates to manage but were still unable to complete the nomination process within the original timeline. It said such a development raised questions about their ability to manage more demanding responsibilities if entrusted with public office.
The APC also said the extension contradicted previous claims by opposition parties that the ruling party had influence over INEC’s decisions. It noted that despite those allegations, the same opposition parties depended on the commission for more time after missing the deadline, while the APC had already completed its submissions without seeking any extension.
The ruling party added that it would have benefited if the electoral commission had maintained the original deadline because it had already complied with the requirements. It said its decision to stay away from the controversy further showed its confidence in the electoral process.
According to the APC, the successful submission of the details of its presidential, vice-presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates reflected the party’s ability to organise its internal activities and comply with electoral guidelines.
The party called on its members, leaders and supporters across the country to shift attention to preparations for the 2027 general elections. It urged party structures at all levels to strengthen grassroots mobilisation, inform Nigerians about the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and prepare for campaigns centred on policy issues ahead of the election.
