Nigeria Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said that no one can determine whether the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, will conduct the 2027 general election fairly or otherwise.
Obi made the remarks during an interview in Germany on Sunday while responding to questions about his view of the INEC chairman and preparations for the next election.
According to Obi, he has not had any personal meeting with Amupitan since his appointment as INEC chairman. He said the electoral body is expected to act as an impartial referee, adding that the chairman’s actions can only be judged by how he carries out his responsibilities when the time comes.
Obi also called on young Nigerians to remain interested in the country’s future. He said Nigeria has the resources and ability to become a better nation if the right decisions are made. He added that a stronger Nigerian economy would not only improve the lives of citizens but would also create more business opportunities for countries such as Germany because of their close economic relationship with Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor said the outcome of the 2027 election will not depend only on public officials but also on the decisions made by Nigerians. He said citizens have the power to reject wrongdoing and support a transparent electoral process if they choose to do so.
Obi further stated that he has witnessed changes in Nigeria’s political system over the years, especially from the period he served as governor until now. He expressed confidence that people can influence positive change whenever they are united in demanding better leadership and accountability.
