The Presidency has described United States President Donald Trump’s recent letter to President Bola Tinubu as a sign that the Nigerian government is making progress in its efforts to address national challenges and strengthen relations with international partners.
The position was made known on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Bwala spoke while reacting to the letter sent by the American president, in which Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and acknowledged his administration’s efforts to improve security in Nigeria.
According to the presidential aide, the communication from the White House reflects the work already being done by the Federal Government. He said the administration remains committed to its programmes and policies, adding that recognition from foreign leaders serves as encouragement rather than the reason for its actions.
He explained that Nigeria has maintained regular engagement with the United States and other international partners, noting that diplomatic communication between leaders often reflects existing cooperation and mutual interests.
Bwala added that while the message from President Trump was welcomed by the Federal Government, it would not change the administration’s direction or level of commitment. He said the government would continue pursuing its objectives regardless of external recognition.
President Trump had earlier sent a letter to President Tinubu, praising what he described as the Nigerian leader’s firm leadership and his administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
The Presidency believes the letter reflects the growing relationship between both countries and views it as another positive development in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with the United States.
