Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is stepping up efforts to address insecurity across Nigeria, expressing confidence that the country will overcome the challenge through ongoing government actions.
Akpabio gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving members of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Dr Lima Ahmed, during a courtesy visit to the National Assembly in Abuja. His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.
He said the Federal Government remained focused on tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and other security threats affecting different parts of the country. According to him, recent developments showed that the government was making progress in its efforts to improve safety and protect lives.
The Senate President pointed to the recent rescue of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State as one of the results of the administration’s ongoing security operations. He said the government was giving full attention to the security situation and would continue taking steps aimed at restoring peace across the country.
Akpabio also urged Nigerians not to rely entirely on reports circulating on social media when assessing the security situation. He said many online reports do not always reflect the full picture of events on the ground and insisted that government agencies were working daily to improve security nationwide.
Speaking further, he addressed the issue of women’s participation in politics. He said one of the factors affecting the success of female politicians was the lack of support among women during elections.
He also noted that the conduct of some women who previously held public office had influenced public perception and created challenges for others seeking elective positions.
The Senate President assured the delegation that the National Assembly would support the forthcoming international ladies golf tournament scheduled to take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
Earlier during the visit, the National President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, Dr Lima Ahmed, thanked Akpabio for receiving the delegation and formally invited him to attend the international tournament. She also decorated him as the Grand Patron of the association.
