President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Wasiu Olanrewaju-Smart as the new Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives). The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced on Sunday by the Presidency following the resignation of Ibrahim Olanrewaju, who left the position to pursue an elective office in his home state.
According to the Presidency, Olanrewaju-Smart takes up the role with years of experience in legislative affairs and public administration. His appointment is expected to strengthen communication and working relations between the Presidency, the House of Representatives and government ministries, departments and agencies.
The new presidential aide holds a doctorate in Educational Management from Lead City University. He also earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University, where he participated in the Edward Mason Fellowship in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. In addition, he obtained a professional diploma in Public Relations from the London School of Public Relations.
His academic background also includes participation in the LEAPS Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Policy Fellowship at Quantum Alliance AI in the United States, where his work focused on artificial intelligence and civic technology.
Olanrewaju-Smart has built a long career within the National Assembly. He served as Research and Media Assistant to the Minority and Majority Leaders of the House of Representatives during the Seventh and Eighth Assemblies. He later worked as Special Adviser, Deputy Chief of Staff and eventually Chief of Staff to the Speaker during the Ninth and Tenth Assemblies.
In October 2023, he joined the Presidency as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Intergovernmental Affairs, a position he held before his latest appointment.
The Presidency also noted that he contributed to research on several major public policy initiatives, including the Interest-Free Student Loan Act and other legislative proposals.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Olanrewaju-Smart would use his experience and knowledge to improve legislative coordination and deepen cooperation between the executive arm of government and the House of Representatives in carrying out national assignments.
