The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has started uploading the details of its 1,015 candidates for the 2027 State Houses of Assembly elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Candidate Nomination Portal. The process began after the party completed the submission of its presidential, governorship and National Assembly candidates ahead of INEC’s August 8 deadline.
SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, disclosed the development on Monday while speaking with journalists during an award presentation by the Arewa Students Union at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He expressed confidence that the party would complete the exercise before the deadline set by the electoral commission.
Gombe explained that the party had already finished uploading the names and details of its presidential, governorship and National Assembly candidates. According to him, the remaining task is the submission of candidates for the State Houses of Assembly.
He said the party now has 1,015 Assembly candidates following the creation of 22 additional constituencies. The figure increased from the previous total of 993 candidates, making the ongoing upload one of the final stages of the party’s nomination process.
The INEC Candidate Nomination Portal was opened on July 18 to allow political parties to submit the names and particulars of their candidates for the 2027 presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections. The electoral body later extended the submission deadline to August 8 to give political parties more time to complete their nomination processes.
The SDP’s update came a day after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) announced that it had uploaded the details of its 27 governorship candidates and their running mates, along with more than 60 percent of its State Assembly candidates.
During the event, Gombe also appreciated the Arewa Students Union for presenting him with an Award of Excellence. He described the recognition as one that belonged to the entire SDP, saying it reflected the collective efforts of party members across the country.
SDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Senator Ugochukwu Uba, also praised the recognition given to Gombe, saying it reflected the quality of leadership within the party.
Speaking on behalf of the Arewa Students Union, its President, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the organisation remains committed to promoting peace, responsible leadership and civic awareness among young people through advocacy and sensitisation programmes in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
