The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of violating democratic principles and weakening the country’s system of governance. The party made the claims on Monday through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he criticised the relationship between the executive, legislature and judiciary under the current administration.
Abdullahi said the government had gone beyond acceptable limits in the way it manages public affairs. He argued that the principle of separation of powers, which is meant to ensure that each arm of government performs its duties independently, was no longer functioning effectively. According to him, the executive, legislature and judiciary now appear to operate in a way that favours the President rather than maintaining institutional independence.
The ADC spokesman also questioned the implementation of the national budget. He claimed that the administration had failed to fully execute approved budgets and alleged that multiple budget cycles were being handled at the same time. He argued that this situation had created uncertainty over the proper implementation of government spending.
Abdullahi further referred to reports alleging that the government carried out trillions of naira in spending outside approved budget provisions. He said such allegations deserved proper attention if they were found to be true and questioned the level of accountability within the current administration.
The opposition party also accused the Federal Government of repeatedly failing to comply with court decisions. Abdullahi claimed that actions taken by the administration had weakened confidence in the rule of law and affected the country’s democratic institutions.
He also alleged that the government had continued to interfere in the affairs of opposition political parties through legal disputes and other actions. According to him, these developments have placed pressure on Nigeria’s democratic system and reduced the space for healthy political competition.
The remarks add to the growing exchange of criticisms between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
