President Bola Tinubu has restated his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of religion across Nigeria in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
He made this known on Saturday during the commissioning of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria (ADSN) National Headquarters, Hassanat Abebi Okunnu House, in Surulere, Lagos.
The President, who was represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said his administration would continue to safeguard the rights of Nigerians to practise their religion while encouraging religious organisations to promote peace, tolerance and unity among citizens.
Tinubu said the government cannot achieve national development alone, noting that faith-based organisations have continued to play an important role in supporting education, healthcare, humanitarian activities and community development.
He described the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society as one of Nigeria’s oldest Islamic organisations, adding that it has made lasting contributions to the country’s growth through its various programmes over the years.
The President also commended Alhaji Femi Okunnu for donating the new national secretariat in honour of his late mother. He said the project would remain a lasting legacy that would continue to benefit future generations. Tinubu also praised the Okunnu family for its record of public service, patriotism and commitment to national development.
Speaking on the late Alhaja Okunnu, the President said her values and good upbringing were reflected in the achievements and reputation of her children. He described her as a woman whose life was marked by discipline, faith and strong moral values.
Also speaking at the event, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat, urged the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society to remain committed to its founding vision by promoting education, moral values and responsible living.
He said education remains one of the most important tools for national development and warned against growing attitudes that discourage young people from pursuing learning.
Hamzat recalled that the society played a major role in encouraging Western education among Muslims at a time when many families were reluctant to embrace it. According to him, the efforts of the organisation helped shape generations of educated Nigerians who continue to contribute to national development.
The National President of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society, Alhaji Mosediq Kazeem, described the new headquarters as the fulfilment of a long-standing vision. He said the building represents the society’s continued dedication to faith, education and service to humanity.
Kazeem noted that after more than a century of existence, the organisation is focused on strengthening its institutions, embracing innovation, supporting young people and expanding its contributions to national development.
He added that the society remains committed to working with government and other stakeholders in raising responsible citizens and building stronger communities across Nigeria.
