Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has declared that President Bola Tinubu is the only presidential candidate capable of winning Rivers State in the 2027 general election. Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja.
The comments were delivered in the Federal Capital Territory. He said a broad political alliance involving members of different political parties had come together to support Tinubu’s second-term bid and pursue what they believe is the best interest of Rivers State.
Wike said those making political calculations for the 2027 presidential election should not expect any candidate other than Tinubu to secure victory in Rivers State. He explained that his confidence was based on his understanding of the state’s political landscape and the support the President currently enjoys across different political groups.
The FCT minister disclosed that members of the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, the Labour Party, the Action Alliance and other political groups had formed a coalition in Rivers State. According to him, the alliance was created to move beyond party lines by backing candidates considered best suited to represent the interests of the people.
He said the coalition would support candidates contesting legislative positions regardless of their political party, provided they enjoy the confidence of the alliance and are committed to the state’s development. He added that the arrangement was gaining acceptance in many parts of Rivers State.
Wike maintained that the coalition’s main goal is to secure President Tinubu’s re-election while ensuring Rivers State continues to benefit from projects and federal attention. He insisted that the movement was not designed to strengthen any particular political party but to promote the overall interest of the state.
The minister also said his political decisions have always been guided by what he believes will benefit Rivers people. He noted that development and improved opportunities for residents remain more important to him than personal political ambition.
Reflecting on his years in public office, Wike said his experience from serving as local government chairman, governor and now minister has given him a deep understanding of politics and governance. He stated that political success depends on knowing the needs of the people and building their confidence.
He also recalled the 2019 governorship election in Rivers State, alleging that there was heavy federal pressure during the poll. Despite the situation, he said he and his supporters remained united and eventually secured victory.
Wike concluded that his political strength comes from the trust many Rivers residents have placed in his leadership over the years. He expressed confidence that the same support would play a major role in delivering the state to President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
