The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has denied endorsing Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, for the 2027 governorship election.
Turaki, the factional national chairman of the party and a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, made his position known after being asked about a reported meeting involving members of his faction.
Reports had claimed that some PDP figures met to discuss support for Idris ahead of the 2027 election. The meeting was said to have involved former minister Buhari Bala and retired General Ishaya Bamayi, who reportedly played roles in the discussions.
However, Turaki said his faction had no knowledge of the reported gathering. He therefore rejected any suggestion that the group had taken a decision at the meeting to support the Kebbi governor.
The development comes as the PDP continues to deal with internal disagreements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party has been divided into different camps, including the faction led by Turaki and another group associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
The disagreement within the party has affected discussions over candidates and political strategies in several states as preparations for the next general election continue.
In Kebbi State, neither the Turaki-led faction nor the Wike camp has officially announced a candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Governor Nasir Idris is currently serving as the Kebbi State governor, while political parties are expected to begin further consultations and preparations ahead of the election.
The denial by Turaki means that the reported meeting cannot be regarded as an endorsement by his faction, leaving the PDP’s position on its preferred candidate for Kebbi unresolved.
