The Osun State Government has declared Friday, August 14, 2026, a work-free day for public workers across the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Governor Ademola Adeleke approved the decision to give workers enough time to travel to their areas and prepare to take part in the election.
The directive was contained in a circular signed by the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina, and made public on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
The work-free day covers public servants across the state, except workers handling essential and emergency duties who are required to remain at their duty posts.
The state government said the arrangement was made to allow eligible workers who may need to travel outside their places of work to do so before the election.
Ahead of the poll, Adeleke also called on workers, their family members and other residents of the state to participate actively in the election.
The governor urged workers to protect their votes and exercise their constitutional right to choose their preferred candidates.
Adeleke also appealed to organised labour and other groups of workers to encourage people in their communities, including artisans, informal workers and professionals, to come out and vote.
He said the election would give residents an opportunity to decide whether they want the current administration to continue in office.
The governor further appealed to voters to preserve the achievements recorded by his administration since it assumed office.
He described his administration as friendly to workers and said it had taken steps to improve the welfare of labour and residents across Osun State.
The declaration comes just a day before the governorship election, with political parties and their supporters making final preparations for the poll.
