Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, has reported at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning over an alleged inciting statement ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Fadahunsi arrived at the command on Wednesday afternoon in the company of Samuel Erale, the Commissioner of Police overseeing election security in the state.
The senator was invited by the police following the circulation of a campaign video from an All Progressives Congress rally held in Ilesa.
In the video, Fadahunsi was allegedly heard making remarks in Yoruba that were interpreted as a call for supporters to attack members of the rival Accord Party.
The video attracted the attention of security authorities as political activities increased across Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The Osun State Police Command had earlier directed the senator to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department for questioning over the alleged remarks.
Police authorities said the comments attributed to Fadahunsi could create tension and threaten the peaceful conduct of the election.
The invitation is part of measures by security agencies to address statements and activities that could lead to violence as political parties conclude their campaigns and prepare for the poll.
Fadahunsi’s appearance before the police is expected to allow investigators to question him about the video and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged remarks.
