Nigerians have called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to arrest Senator Francis Fadahunsi over an alleged threatening remark ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday.
Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has come under criticism following a video circulating on social media in which he was seen addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ilesa.
The video reportedly emerged during a gathering involving APC supporters who were protesting alleged attacks against members of the party in the area.
Those calling for the senator’s arrest accused him of making statements that could threaten the safety of members and supporters of the Accord Party ahead of the election.
The development has raised concerns among some residents and political groups as the state prepares for the August 15 governorship poll.
The call for police action is coming amid increased political tension in parts of Osun State, with different parties accusing their opponents of actions capable of disrupting the election.
Those demanding Fadahunsi’s arrest want the police to examine the video, establish the circumstances surrounding the senator’s remarks and determine whether any offence was committed.
The development also comes as security agencies intensify preparations across the state ahead of the election, with authorities expected to protect voters, political parties and other residents before, during and after the exercise.
Fadahunsi has yet to be reported as responding to the latest call for his arrest.
