President Bola Tinubu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure that Saturday’s Osun State governorship election is peaceful, transparent and credible.
The President made the call on Friday, August 14, 2026, a day before residents of the state are expected to vote for the next governor.
Fifteen candidates are taking part in the election, with Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji and African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam among the major contenders.
Tinubu urged INEC to ensure that the voting process is properly organised and that every stage of the election is conducted in line with the law.
He also asked the electoral commission to use the Osun poll to show its level of preparation for the 2027 general elections, describing the election as the final off-cycle governorship poll before the next general election.
The President further directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security chiefs deployed to Osun to provide adequate protection for voters, electoral officials and other participants.
He warned that there should be no opportunity for individuals or groups seeking to cause trouble to disrupt the voting process.
Tinubu also called for voters and election officials to be protected from intimidation, saying residents should be able to perform their civic duties without fear.
The President encouraged eligible voters across Osun to come out and vote for candidates of their choice while avoiding any action capable of causing violence or disturbing the election.
He said the credibility of the poll would depend on whether the final result reflects the actual choice of voters across the state.
The election comes amid heightened political activity and security preparations across Osun, with police and other security agencies already deploying personnel ahead of the poll.
Tinubu’s call adds to appeals from electoral and security authorities for political parties, candidates and voters to maintain peace before, during and after the election.
The President said all stakeholders have a duty to protect the democratic process and ensure that the outcome of the election represents the will of the people of Osun State.
