Sowore criticizes Adeleke over Tinubu endorsement after Osun election

Activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over his decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term shortly after winning the state governorship election.

Sowore raised his concerns in a post on Monday, August 17, 2026, questioning the governor’s decision and demanding answers over deaths allegedly recorded during the violence linked to the Osun election.

The activist claimed that nearly 50 people were killed before and during the election. He questioned why the deaths had not received enough attention and called for those responsible for the violence to be identified and brought to justice.

Sowore also questioned the timing of Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu, which came less than a day after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the governorship election.

He criticised the governor for supporting Tinubu despite the deaths he alleged occurred during the election period. Sowore also suggested that Adeleke’s decision was influenced by their shared Yoruba background.

The activist asked who was responsible for the reported deaths and who ordered or enabled the violence. He also demanded to know whether investigations had begun and what steps were being taken to provide justice for the affected families.

Adeleke defeated the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the governorship election to secure another term as Osun State governor.

Following his victory, Adeleke expressed support for Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid, while maintaining his position within the Peoples Democratic Party.

Sowore’s criticism adds to the political reactions surrounding Adeleke’s re-election and his decision to support Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The activist’s comments also come amid wider political debates over the conduct of the Osun election, the violence reported around the poll and the political alliances taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
