Natasha Osawaru, wife of Nigerian music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has been appointed Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Osawaru, who represents Egor Constituency, assumed the position during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers carried out a reshuffle of the Assembly’s principal leadership positions.
Her appointment followed her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Nigeria Democratic Congress in May 2026. She now occupies one of the key opposition positions in the state legislature.
Before becoming Minority Leader, Osawaru served as Deputy Majority Leader of the Assembly. During her time in the legislature, she has been involved in issues relating to grassroots development, parliamentary activities, youth development and the empowerment of women.
The new leadership arrangement was announced at the Assembly Complex in Benin City as lawmakers adjusted several principal positions following changes among the different party caucuses.
Osawaru’s move to the minority leadership places her at the centre of opposition activities in the Edo Assembly and gives her a major role in representing the interests of lawmakers outside the ruling majority.
After her emergence, the Egor lawmaker thanked the leadership of the Assembly, her colleagues and residents of her constituency for the confidence placed in her.
She said the new position came with a responsibility to represent citizens and take part in debates on issues affecting the state.
Osawaru also pledged to continue working towards the development of Edo State, the growth of the NDC and the welfare of people in Egor Constituency.
Her appointment comes as political realignments continue in Edo State following movements by lawmakers between political parties.
The reshuffling of the Assembly leadership is expected to affect the way opposition lawmakers coordinate their activities and engage with the majority on legislation and other matters before the House.
As Minority Leader, Osawaru will be expected to coordinate members of the opposition caucus, contribute to legislative debates and present the position of the minority on policies and bills considered by the Assembly.
Her elevation also adds a new role to her political career as she continues her representation of Egor Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly.
