The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has attributed the recent flooding in parts of Abuja to illegal construction on waterways and the effects of climate change.
Wike made this known on Wednesday during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while speaking about the recurring flood situation in the nation’s capital.
The minister said some waterways in Abuja had been blocked over the years by buildings that were constructed illegally, making it difficult for rainwater to flow through its natural channels.
According to him, the continued development of properties on waterways has contributed to the flooding recorded in different parts of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Wike disclosed that the FCT Administration had taken steps against officials who allegedly allowed illegal developments to take place.
He said a director in the Federal Capital Development Authority had been suspended over allegations that building approvals were issued for construction on waterways.
The minister said the government would continue to take action against developments that violate planning regulations and put residents at risk.
However, Wike noted that illegal construction was not the only reason for the recent flooding. He also pointed to changing weather patterns and the wider effects of climate change as another factor behind the situation.
His comments came as residents in parts of Abuja continued to deal with the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding.
The minister maintained that proper urban planning and respect for approved development rules were necessary to reduce the risk of flooding in the capital.
He said the FCT Administration would continue to monitor construction activities and address developments that obstruct waterways or violate existing planning regulations.
Wike’s position comes amid growing concerns over the impact of flooding on roads, homes and other infrastructure in Abuja, with authorities facing pressure to find lasting solutions to the problem.
