The Benue State Police Command has arrested some suspects in connection with the reported blockade of the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to the state on Tuesday. The arrests form part of an investigation into the incident, which heightened tensions surroundi
ng Obi’s movement in Benue.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference in Makurdi. He did not, however, disclose the number of individuals taken into custody.
Nwadiogbu explained that police personnel deployed to provide security during Obi’s visit handled the situation carefully to prevent the confrontation from escalating into violence.
Aoach should not be interpreted as a failure to act. He said the officers were focused on preventing a situation that could have resulted in deaths, injuries or property damage.
The police commissioner said Obi was eventually escorted safely to the airport and departed the state without further incident.
He explained that a group of individuals had obstructed the former Anambra State governor’s movement, creating tension at the scene and raising concerns that the situation could escalate into violence.
Following the incident, the command commenced an intelligence-led investigation to identify those involved. Nwadiogbu said some arrests had already been made, while efforts were ongoing to locate and apprehend other individuals connected with the blockade.
The police commissioner also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism and neutrality in the discharge of its duties, regardless of the political affiliation or status of those involved in any incident.
He said every Nigerian is entitled to move freely within the country and that political differences, social status or personal beliefs should not be used to prevent anyone from exercising that right.
Nwadiogbu said the police would take appropriate action against anyone found to have unlawfully restricted another person’s freedom of movement.
The command assured residents and other members of the public that the investigation would be concluded and that anyone found responsible would face the appropriate legal consequences.
The commissioner appealed for calm as investigators continue their work, urging the public to refrain from actions that could interfere with the investigation or further heighten tensions in the state.
