The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has vowed to continue its preparations for the 2027 general elections despite alleged attacks on some of its members in parts of the South-East.
The party made its position known in a statement released on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, following an alleged attack on members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The NDC described the incident as an attempt to intimidate its supporters and disrupt its political activities. The party said the alleged attack would not prevent it from taking part in the 2027 elections or carrying out its mobilisation efforts.
The party also claimed that similar incidents had occurred in other parts of the South-East, including Imo State. It criticised the response of security agencies, alleging that they had not done enough to prevent or properly address such incidents.
The NDC further accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu of being concerned about its growing presence in the state. However, the party did not provide evidence to support the allegation.
Rather than withdraw from political activities, the NDC said the reported incidents had strengthened its determination to reach more voters and build support for its candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party maintained that efforts to create fear among its members would not stop its nationwide mobilisation campaign. It said its supporters would continue to engage with communities and promote the party’s political message.
The NDC called on security agencies to conduct an immediate investigation into the alleged attack in Enugu. It also urged authorities to identify those responsible and investigate claims that other individuals may have sponsored or supported the incident.
The party said it remained committed to democratic participation and would continue its preparations for the 2027 general elections despite the challenges it said its members were facing.
