The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has alleged that its members were attacked during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The party made the allegation on Monday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, as it condemned what it described as an attack on members who had gathered for a political meeting.
The NDC accused individuals it described as state-sponsored thugs of disrupting the meeting and attacking its members. The party said its members have the right to hold peaceful meetings, organise and take part in political activities without being attacked or intimidated.
The opposition party also accused security agencies of not doing enough to prevent attacks against opposition members in Enugu State and other parts of the South-East.
The NDC said the incident in Enugu was not the first time its members had faced attacks during political activities. According to the party, two similar incidents had earlier occurred in Imo State during a town hall meeting and a consultation exercise involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
The party further alleged that the growing activities of the NDC in Enugu had caused concern within the APC in the state. It claimed that the ruling party was uncomfortable with the opposition’s increasing efforts to organise and mobilise supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the alleged attack, the NDC said it would continue its political activities across the state and other parts of the country.
The party said its members would remain involved in grassroots mobilisation, meetings and campaigns as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
The NDC called on security agencies to investigate the Enugu incident and identify those behind the alleged attack. It also urged the authorities to investigate the party’s claim that political sponsors were behind the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted.
The party maintained that the alleged attack would not prevent it from participating in the democratic process or pursuing its political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
