President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Shettima disclosed the development on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in a post on his X account, confirming that he would attend the global meeting on behalf of the President.
Other members of the Nigerian delegation are expected to include Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, federal ministers and other senior government officials.
The 81st UN General Assembly is scheduled to take place in New York, with the General Debate set to run from September 22 to 26 and continue on September 28. The meeting is being held under the theme of rebuilding trust, managing global changes and strengthening the ability of the United Nations to serve people around the world.
As the head of Nigeria’s delegation, Shettima is expected to deliver the country’s national statement during the General Debate. His address will present Nigeria’s position on issues affecting the country and the international community.
Areas expected to feature in Nigeria’s participation include national development, peace and security, economic growth and cooperation between countries.
The Vice President is also expected to take part in discussions on the right to development and climate action, as well as other matters considered important to Nigeria and the wider African continent.
Shettima’s attendance at the UNGA will therefore provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to present its views on major international issues while engaging with other world leaders and representatives at the annual United Nations gathering.
