The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has distanced himself from the OK Movement Presidential Campaign Council formed ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he was not involved in its creation.
Obi made this known during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as controversy continued over the campaign structure established by the support group.
The OK Movement, led by John Ughulu, had recently announced the formation of a presidential campaign council as part of its preparations for the 2027 election.
The development had drawn criticism from the NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, who opposed the move and called for the group to be brought under the control of the political party.
Reacting to the issue during the interview, Obi said the NDC remained the political party to which he and his supporters belonged and indicated that he agreed with Dickson’s position on the matter.
He explained that groups such as the OK Movement, the Obidient movement and Kwankwasiyya were support groups connected to the political process and should operate in that capacity.
According to Obi’s position, such groups could support the party and its candidates but should not take on responsibilities reserved for the political party itself.
He said the creation of a presidential campaign council by one of the support groups crossed that line because campaign structures for the presidential contest should be handled by the political party.
The dispute comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with different support groups and political organisations making plans to mobilise voters and build structures around their preferred candidates.
The formation of the OK Movement council had raised questions about the relationship between the support group and the NDC, particularly over who should coordinate campaign activities for the party’s presidential candidate.
Obi’s latest comments make it clear that he does not regard the OK Movement campaign council as a structure created with his involvement.
The issue also comes against the background of efforts by political parties and their support groups to establish campaign structures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
