The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ola Olukoyode, has said that the maximum amount of stolen funds that can be recovered after being taken is about 60 per cent.
Olukoyode disclosed this on Friday during the inauguration of the EFCC Zonal Office in Awka, Anambra State.
He explained that recovering money after it has been stolen is difficult, making prevention a more effective way of tackling corruption and financial crimes.
The EFCC chairman therefore urged Nigerians to take steps to prevent corruption by reporting suspected cases to the commission as soon as they are identified.
According to him, once stolen funds have been moved or spent, investigators may not be able to recover the entire amount, leaving only part of the money potentially recoverable.
Olukoyode also said the commission’s presence in Anambra was aimed at strengthening its activities in the state and contributing to the growth of the local economy.
He encouraged residents to cooperate with the EFCC by providing information on suspected financial crimes and corruption cases.
