Lagos Announces Independence Bridge Diversion

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to divert traffic on the Independence Bridge on Lagos Island as repair work is set to begin on the busy road.

The repair exercise, being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works, will involve urgent asphalt repairs on the bridge and affect motorists travelling in both directions.

The work is scheduled to begin at night on Friday, October 16, 2026, and continue through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The Lagos State Government said traffic arrangements would be introduced to reduce the difficulties motorists may face during the repair period.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun, explained that the repair work would affect both the inbound and outbound sections of the bridge.

According to the government, the bridge would not be completely shut down during the exercise. Instead, workers would close parts of the road in stages to allow repairs to be carried out while keeping traffic moving.

Under the arrangement, one lane would remain open as work progresses on the affected sections. This is expected to allow motorists to continue using the bridge, although some delays may occur.

The state government advised motorists to plan their journeys before setting out and consider alternative routes to avoid spending too much time in traffic.

Drivers heading towards Lagos Island and nearby areas have also been urged to prepare for possible changes to their usual routes during the three-day repair exercise.

To manage the expected traffic around the bridge, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to the affected areas.

The officers will direct vehicles, enforce traffic rules and help reduce delays as motorists navigate the sections where repairs are taking place.

The government appealed to road users to remain calm, exercise patience and follow instructions from traffic officials throughout the period.

It also urged motorists to cooperate with the traffic management measures put in place to ensure that the repair work proceeds without unnecessary disruption.

Motorists travelling through Lagos Island and surrounding areas have been advised to leave their homes earlier than usual and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The government said cooperation from road users would help ease traffic movement while the Federal Ministry of Works carries out the repairs on the Independence Bridge.
