The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has dismissed media reports linking a placard he carried during a prayer walk to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Adeboye spoke on Sunday during the church’s November Thanksgiving service, where he accused a journalist of misrepresenting the incident and portraying him as a wicked person for allegedly carrying a placard against Jonathan.
Recounting how he came across the report, the cleric said he was initially amused by the claim that he had carried a placard against the former president.
Adeboye admitted that he carried a placard but insisted that the exercise was a prayer walk, not a protest against Jonathan.
He explained that the activity followed a directive asking churches to organise prayer walks around their premises, adding that he participated in the exercise to pray.
The RCCG leader also challenged the timeline presented in the report, noting that he carried the placard in 2020, five years after Jonathan left office in 2015.
He said the exercise took place during the second term of former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing the journalist of twisting the facts and publishing a misleading account without properly investigating the circumstances.
Adeboye further recalled his exposure to journalism studies in the 1960s, saying he was taught the importance of investigative journalism and verifying information before publishing a story.
He urged journalists to investigate reports thoroughly rather than relying on appearances, noting that events may not always be what they seem.
