The Nigeria Police Force intercepted over 100 jerrycans of petrol during separate anti-smuggling operations along highways in northern Nigeria.

The operations were conducted by the Force’s Border Patrol Unit to curb the illegal transportation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across the country’s borders.On the Illela–Sokoto Highway, officers stopped a vehicle carrying 80 jerrycans of petrol and arrested the driver, Yasir Adamu.

Investigations revealed that the suspect intended to smuggle the fuel into the neighboring Niger Republic.In a related operation in Katsina State, police recovered 35 jerrycans of petrol, each containing 25 litres, after the suspects abandoned the fuel and fled upon sighting the officers.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend those responsible.The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the officers for their alertness and professionalism, assuring that the police would maintain strong border security and continue to tackle economic crimes.
Fuel smuggling has grown more prevalent since the removal of petrol subsidies in May 2023, driven by the wide price difference between Nigeria and its neighbors. Petrol now costs over N900 per litre in many parts of Nigeria, while neighboring countries charge even higher prices, creating opportunities for cross-border trade.
The Nigeria Customs Service has confirmed ongoing smuggling activities and continues to support anti-smuggling patrols.
