At about 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency and rerouted the flight to El Prat Airport in Barcelona. Sources said the late Air Vice Marshal, believed to be in his early 80s and from Anambra State, had been unwell and was returning home for further medical attention when he died in his seat.

His death caused panic among passengers, leading to a second emergency involving a pregnant woman, though her condition was not immediately known at the time of reporting.

British Airways later issued an apology to passengers, assuring them of support and explaining that arrangements had been made for a replacement aircraft to complete the journey to Abuja.

The airline announced that the new flight would leave Barcelona at 2:50 p.m. local time and was expected to arrive in Abuja around 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
