Sowore Meets Jonathan in Abuja Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on Friday met with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The meeting, which took place days before Sowore’s planned march to the Presidential Villa on October 20, focused on seeking Kanu’s unconditional release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held on terrorism-related charges.

According to Sowore, his discussion with Jonathan centered on finding a fair and peaceful resolution to Kanu’s prolonged detention. The activist noted that the former president agreed on the need to bring closure to the matter, stressing that the issue has remained a concern for national unity and justice.

Jonathan was said to have expressed willingness to meet with President Bola Tinubu soon to discuss the case and the possibility of a political solution.Sowore, who has been vocal about the need for Kanu’s release, described the move as part of a broader effort to secure justice for individuals facing politically motivated charges in Nigeria.

He said the continued detention of Kanu has deepened public frustration, especially among groups who believe the IPOB leader only sought to challenge what they describe as marginalization.

The activist also called on key political and regional leaders, including Peter Obi, Governors Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodimma, as well as Oby Ezekwesili and Ohanaeze Ndigbo President John Mbata, to join in pushing for Kanu’s freedom.

In recent weeks, several public figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, senior lawyer Femi Falana, and Senator Shehu Sani, have also backed the campaign for Kanu’s release.

Sowore said preparations are underway for the October 20 demonstration in Abuja, which will call on the federal government to release Kanu and review similar political cases in the country.
